WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), the ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has strongly criticized the Department of Labor’s (DOL) final rule that limits American workers' ability to access quality, affordable health care.

The final regulation targets Association Health Plans (AHP), which have been instrumental in providing small businesses and workers with access to quality health insurance as an alternative to the increasingly costly plans available on the Affordable Care Act marketplace. Senator Cassidy highlighted that the new rule, implemented under the Biden administration, reverses the policy put in place by the Trump administration that expanded options for small businesses and independent contractors to access AHPs for health insurance coverage.

In response to the restrictive nature of the new rule, Senator Cassidy expressed his concerns, stating, "Rather than increase health insurance options, this rule threatens the ability of workers to participate in AHPs that provide quality, affordable insurance for themselves and their families." He further emphasized, “President Biden is dealing another blow to Americans who are struggling to afford health care under this administration.”

Previously, Senator Cassidy had urged the DOL to withdraw the proposed AHP rule to ensure that all workers have access to quality health insurance at a low cost.
